Concrete Stairs Estimating Notes
- Stairs use more concrete than people expect: the solid ramp under the treads is usually 60 to 70% of the total volume.
- Check local code for riser height before you build the forms. Most residential codes cap risers around 7.75 inches and require treads of at least 10 inches.
- Keep every riser within 3/8 inch of the others. Uneven risers are the most common reason poured steps fail inspection.
- A 3-step stoop 4 ft wide holds roughly 0.5 to 0.7 cubic yards — still under the 1-yard mark where bagged mix makes sense.
- Slope each tread about 1/4 inch per foot toward the front so water sheds instead of pooling and freezing.
- Add a 10% waste allowance. Step forms leak at the corners and the top step always takes more than the math predicts.

How do you calculate concrete for stairs?
Work out two volumes and add them. First the solid ramp under the steps: average height times width times run, divided by 27. Then each step: rise times tread depth times width, divided by 27. The calculator above does both once you enter total run, width, total rise, and step count.
How many bags of concrete do 3 steps need?
A 3-step stoop 4 ft wide with 7-inch risers and 11-inch treads works out to roughly 15 cubic feet, or about 0.55 cubic yards. That is around 25 bags of 80 lb mix once you include waste.
How thick should concrete steps be?
Treads are typically 5 to 7 inches thick over a compacted base, with solid concrete forming the ramp beneath. Steps carried on a foundation wall or footing are often 4 to 6 inches thick with reinforcement instead of full solid fill.
Do concrete steps need rebar?
Most poured steps use #3 or #4 bar through the ramp plus a mat in the top landing. The exact requirement depends on span, soil, and local code, so confirm against your plans before ordering steel.
Is it cheaper to pour steps or buy precast?
Precast steps usually win on a small stoop because forming is the expensive part of a poured job. Pouring makes sense for custom widths, curves, or when you need to tie into an existing slab.
How long before you can walk on new concrete steps?
Usually 24 to 48 hours for light foot traffic and about 7 days before heavy use. Strip the forms carefully: green concrete chips easily along step edges, and a chipped nose is permanent.
