When estimating the cost of a new concrete driveway, width is one of the biggest factors you can control. Homeowners often default to matching their garage width, but this can lead to tight fits, cracked edges, or paying for concrete you don't need.

A driveway needs to accommodate not just your current vehicle, but potential future trucks, SUVs, delivery vans, and guests. 1. Single-Car Driveway Width

A single-car driveway is designed for a single vehicle width.

  • Minimum Width: 10 feet
  • Recommended Width: 12 feet

Why 12 feet is better: A standard passenger car is about 6 feet wide, but once you factor in side mirrors, open doors, and passenger access, a 10-foot driveway leaves very little margin. If you park slightly off-center, passengers will have to step onto the grass or dirt. Adding 2 extra feet is highly recommended to prevent soil erosion along the concrete edge.

2. Double-Car Driveway Width

A double-car driveway allows two vehicles to park side-by-side or pass each other.

  • Minimum Width: 18 feet
  • Recommended Width: 20 to 24 feet

Why 20+ feet is better: An 18-foot driveway is functional for two compact cars, but if you park two large SUVs or pickup trucks side-by-side, doors will ding and mirrors will clash. A 20-foot width is the sweet spot for residential neighborhoods, while a 24-foot width matches a standard two-car garage opening perfectly.

3. Triple-Car Driveway Width

A triple-car driveway matches a three-car garage or provides parking for three vehicles side-by-side.

Three Planning Factors to Consider

  1. The Turning Radius: If your driveway curves, you must widen the concrete in the turns. A standard passenger car needs a turning radius of at least 15 feet, while trucks and SUVs need 18 to 22 feet. The concrete should flare out at the curve to prevent tires from clipping the lawn.
  2. Driveway Apron Flare: Where the driveway meets the public road (the apron), local zoning laws often require a flare. Widening the driveway apron by 2 to 3 feet on each side makes turning in from the street much safer and protects the asphalt or concrete street curb.
  3. Zoning and Easements: Before pouring concrete, check your local building codes and HOA rules. Many municipalities restrict how close a driveway can be to a property line (often 2 to 5 feet) and limit the maximum percentage of front yard coverage that can be paved.
