Concrete Subgrade Prep: Compaction, Base Gravel & Grading Requirements
Concrete lives and dies by its base. Learn the step-by-step guide to preparing soil, grading, and compacting gravel for slabs, driveways, and patios.
Homeowners often focus on the concrete finish, but the longevity of a slab is determined before the ready-mix truck even arrives. A concrete slab is only as stable as the soil and gravel underneath it.
Poor subgrade preparation is the number one cause of structural cracking, slab heaving, and shifting. If concrete is poured over uncompacted soil, mud, or tree roots, the base will settle unevenly under the weight of the concrete and loads, cracking the slab.
Here is the professional guide to preparing the subgrade, grading the slope, and compacting the base gravel for a long-lasting pour. If you have not squared and staked the pour area yet, start with how to lay out a concrete slab, then come back here to prep the base.
1. Excavation & Soil Prep
First, remove all organic material. Topsoil, grass, sod, and roots must be excavated. Organic material decomposes over time, leaving voids and hollow spots beneath the concrete.
- Slab Thickness: For a standard 4-inch slab on a 4-inch gravel base, you must excavate the soil to a depth of 8 inches below the finished slab height. (See how thick a concrete slab should be for other load cases.)
- Clay Soils: Clay soils expand and contract dramatically with moisture. If you have heavy clay, excavate an additional 2 inches and replace it with extra base gravel to provide a drainage buffer.
2. Soil Compaction (Subgrade)
Once the soil is excavated, the bare earth (subgrade) must be compacted.
[!CAUTION] Do not skip compacting the bare dirt! Any loose dirt left at the bottom of the excavation will settle under the weight of the gravel and concrete, causing structural voids.
Rent a mechanical plate compactor for larger areas. Run it across the entire excavated dirt bed until the soil is firm enough that walking on it leaves no noticeable footprints.
3. Selecting & Installing Base Gravel
Base gravel acts as a drainage buffer and load-distribution layer. It prevents capillary water from rising through the soil and freezing directly beneath the concrete, which causes frost heaving.
The Best Gravel Specs:
- CA-6 (Crusher Run) / 3/4-Inch Road Gravel: A mixture of 3/4-inch crushed limestone and limestone dust. The dust fills the voids between the stones, locking them into a solid, asphalt-like base when compacted.
- Clean Stone (3/4-inch): Best for wet or poorly drained areas, as it allows water to pass through freely.
Installation:
- Spread the gravel in 2-inch lifts (layers) rather than dumping all 4 inches at once.
- Compact each lift thoroughly with the plate compactor. Compacting in layers ensures the base is compacted uniformly from the bottom up.

4. Grading for Water Drainage
Water must drain away from the concrete slab. Slabs should slope at a rate of 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch per linear foot away from houses, retaining walls, and garages.
Use a transit level, laser level, or string lines to verify the grade slope before placing the gravel base. Once the gravel base is compacted, double-check the slope to ensure no low spots remain where water could pool.
5. Installing the Vapor Barrier
For interior slabs (garages, workshops, basements), install a 10-mil polyethylene vapor barrier over the compacted gravel base. The vapor barrier prevents moisture from the soil from migrating up through the porous concrete, which ruins flooring adhesives, rusts tools, and breeds mold. Overlap the sheets by 6 inches and seal the seams with heavy-duty construction tape.
