How to Layout a Concrete Slab: Formwork, Batter Boards & Square Math

The most common mistake DIYers make when pouring a slab is rushing the layout. If your forms are out of square by even an inch, it will telegraph into every framing lumber cut, floor tile, and roof truss that sits on top.

Tools Required:
- Wooden stakes (2x2) and batter board lumber (1x4)
- Mason's string line (non-stretch nylon)
- Sledgehammer and hand hammer
- Tape measure (minimum 50 ft)
- Line level or transit level
- Wood screws (3-inch)
Step 1: Establish the First Reference Line
Identify the exact location of one edge of your slab. This is typically parallel to a property line, fence, or existing house foundation. Drive two stakes into the ground at the ends of this reference line and stretch a masonβs string tightly between them. This line represents the first side of your finished concrete.
Step 2: Set Up Batter Boards
Batter boards are temporary wooden frames consisting of two stakes driven into the ground with a horizontal board screwed between them. They are placed 3 to 4 feet beyond the actual corners of the slab. Place batter boards at all four corners. Because they sit outside the work area, you can dig, grade, and compact soil without disturbing your string lines.

Step 3: Run the Mason Strings
Tie string lines to the batter boards and stretch them across the slab area to match your dimensions. The strings will intersect at the four corners of your future slab.
Step 4: Square the Corners (The 3-4-5 Rule)
To make sure your intersections are perfect 90-degree angles, use the Pythagorean theorem ($A^2 + B^2 = C^2$).
- From a corner intersection, measure exactly 3 feet along one string and mark it with a piece of tape.
- Measure exactly 4 feet along the intersecting string and mark it.
- Measure diagonally between the two marks. The distance must be exactly 5 feet.
- If the diagonal is less than 5 feet, the angle is too tight; adjust the string along the batter board until the diagonal measures exactly 5 feet.
For larger slabs, scale this up to a 6-8-10 or 12-16-20 ratio for greater accuracy.

Step 5: Double-Check Diagonals
Once all four corners are squared using the 3-4-5 rule, measure the two long diagonals (from opposite corners).
[!IMPORTANT] If your slab layout is a perfect rectangle, the two diagonal measurements must be identical. If they differ by more than $1/8$ of an inch, adjust the strings along the batter boards until they match perfectly.
Step 6: Level the Strings
Use a transit level, builder's level, or water level to check the height of the strings. Adjust the strings vertically on the batter boards until all strings are perfectly level.
