Decks require a solid structural foundation to prevent them from sinking, leaning, or heaving. Poured concrete columns inside cardboard form tubes — commonly known as Sonotubes — are the gold standard for deck footings.
Getting the diameter, depth, and concrete volume correct is critical to passing building inspections and ensuring structural safety. Here is a guide to designing Sonotube deck footings and calculating your concrete requirements.
1. Footing Depth & The Frost Line
The depth of a deck footing is driven by the local frost line — the maximum depth to which soil freezes in winter.
When moisture in soil freezes, it expands. If your footing sits above the frost line, the freezing soil will push the footing upward (frost heave), causing the deck to warp, detach from the house, or collapse.
- Warm Climates: Where the ground does not freeze, footings are typically poured at a minimum depth of 12 to 18 inches to reach stable, load-bearing soil.
- Cold Climates: In northern states, the frost line can be 36 to 48 inches deep. Local building codes require the bottom of the footing to sit below this line.
2. Choosing the Right Sonotube Diameter
The diameter of the Sonotube is determined by the load it supports. Larger decks, multi-level decks, and decks supporting hot tubs require wider footings to distribute the weight across more soil area.
- 8-Inch Tubes: Suitable for small, single-level wood decks (poured over stable, high-bearing soils).
- 10-Inch Tubes: The standard residential choice for medium-sized decks.
- 12-Inch Tubes: Required for heavy loads, tall decks, commercial structures, or weak/sandy soils.

Step-by-Step Installation Checklist
- Dig the Hole: Excavate the hole 2 to 3 inches wider than your Sonotube diameter. Use a post-hole digger or auger.
- Add Gravel: Place 3 inches of clean gravel at the bottom of the hole for drainage and load distribution.
- Place the Sonotube: Cut the cardboard tube to length, place it in the hole, and level the top. Keep the tube 2 to 3 inches above the finished grade to protect the wood deck posts from soil moisture.
- Insert Rebar: Insert two vertical pieces of #3 or #4 steel rebar inside the tube. Steel reinforcing prevents the concrete column from snapping under lateral wind or soil shear loads. (Not sure which gauge to use? See rebar vs. wire mesh.)
- Pour and Consolidate: Mix the concrete to a firm, peanut-butter consistency. Pour it in lifts, tapping the side of the tube with a mallet to release trapped air bubbles.
- Set Anchor Bolts: Insert a galvanized steel J-bolt or post base anchor into the wet concrete at the top of the column. Verify alignment before the concrete cures.
