Concrete Pool Deck Cost Estimator Guide for 2026

Pouring a pool deck requires slip-resistant finishes, proper drainage, and special sealants. Learn how to estimate the unique costs of pool flatwork.

A concrete pool deck is not just a standard patio with a hole in the middle. If you try to price a pool deck using basic residential flatwork numbers, your budget will fall apart. Pool decks endure constant water exposure, aggressive pool chemicals, and barefoot traffic. This means they require complex drainage grading, specialized slip-resistant finishes, and high-quality sealants. The base volume math remains the same, but the finishing costs are significantly higher. We built our Concrete Cost Estimator to help you find the baseline material cost, but here is what you really need to know to estimate a custom pool deck.

Calculating the Volume of a Pool Deck

To estimate your material, you need to find the square footage of the concrete itself. This requires a little bit of geometry. You must calculate the area of the entire footprint (the pool plus the deck), and then subtract the area of the pool itself.

For example, if you want a 4-foot wide deck around a 16 ft × 32 ft rectangular pool:

  1. The total footprint is 24 ft wide (4 + 16 + 4) and 40 ft long (4 + 32 + 4).
  2. Total Area: 24 × 40 = 960 square feet.
  3. Pool Area: 16 × 32 = 512 square feet.
  4. Deck Area: 960 - 512 = 448 square feet of concrete.

A pool deck should be poured at 4 inches thick. Convert the 448 square feet to cubic yards: 448 × (4 ÷ 12) = 149.3 cubic feet. Divide by 27 = 5.5 cubic yards.

Add the standard 10% waste factor, and you need to order 6 cubic yards of ready-mix.

The Cost of the Finish

The finish is where pool deck pricing diverges from a standard patio. A simple smooth trowel finish is dangerous around a pool because it becomes an ice rink when wet. You must pay for texture.

A basic broom finish is the cheapest safe option. Installed, a broom-finished pool deck will cost roughly $7 to $12 per square foot.

However, most homeowners want a decorative look. Stamped concrete that mimics natural stone or wood planks is incredibly popular for pool decks, but it requires color hardeners, release agents, and specialized labor. A stamped concrete patio or pool deck will run $15 to $25 per square foot.

Additional Costs: Drainage and Cantilever Edges

You cannot allow dirty deck water to drain back into the pool. The contractor must grade the subbase perfectly and often install strip drains (deck drains) along the perimeter to carry water away. These linear drains cost roughly $15 to $30 per linear foot installed.

Additionally, the edge where the concrete meets the water (the coping) is critical. A standard cantilevered concrete edge requires specialized foam forms that clip to the pool track. This architectural edge looks premium but adds significant labor time. Expect to pay an additional $10 to $20 per linear foot just for the coping work around the perimeter of the pool.
