The answer depends almost entirely on size, because small pads get hammered by minimum charges that make the per-square-foot cost feel absurd.

A concrete pad is essentially a small slab. The math is identical. But pads are usually small enough that the delivery and labor minimums dominate the price, not the concrete itself. Here is how to estimate the real cost and avoid the most common budget traps.

For anything under about 100 square feet, the concrete material is almost irrelevant — it is the labor minimum and delivery fees that set the floor price.

The Small Pad Problem: Minimum Charges

Here is why a tiny 3×3 AC pad costs $200+ even though the concrete itself is worth about $15:

  1. Contractor minimums. Most concrete crews will not show up for less than $300–$500. They have to drive, set up, form, pour, finish, and clean up regardless of size.
  2. Short-load fees. If you order less than about 3 cubic yards of ready-mix, the supplier charges a surcharge of $50 to $150 for the half-empty truck.
  3. Forming labor. A small pad still needs clean forms, a level base, and careful finishing. The forming takes roughly the same time whether the pad is 3×3 or 6×6.

For pads under about 1 cubic yard, bagged concrete mixed on site is usually the smarter play. You avoid the short-load fee entirely, and a 3×3 pad only needs about 5 or 6 bags of 80-lb mix.
